Karon and I have been watching a lot of movies this week so I figure I should put out my two cents on them in the order we saw them.
The other day we went to a local drive-in which gave us not one, but two movies for the price of one movie and a soda. First up was Hellboy 2, I was really expecting something here, I enjoyed the first hellboy film a lot and was hoping for a similar experience. Also I mean it looked swank in the trailers, unfortunately its another one of those hey lets put most of the good bits in the trailer. The film involved an unending stream of macguffin's which some of which were pretty much pointless. Like the german ectoplasmic guy. Why did we have an ectoplasmic guy? So he could possess a locker and beat up red in one scene and to take over one of teh golden army golems briefly and prove how ineffective they were gonna be against them, yay! Then there was the terribly written and implemented romantic storylines. That's right not one, but two crappy romantic subplots. One between red and the pyrokineticist with her being pregnant and not knowing how to tell him and then between abe and the princess who pulled triple macguffin status as not only abe's love interest for the movie, and the bearer of piece of the widget for controlling the golden army, but also was the means of defeating PrinceElricNuada. All in all I could have waited for the dvd to be that underwhelmed, all I got from it was a burning desire to see a fuckin Elric film already.
The second movie which has generally been reviewed more poorly was Get Smart, a rehash of one of my favorite spy spoofs when I was a kid. It also had a lot of people from the office in it which seemed odd, but then another movie I'm not to yet also did that so maybe they travel in groups like the Cusacks. To get on with it, I really enjoyed it, it diverged from the source material in a number of ways while making nods in others. Max is still bumbling while not being so inept that you can't fathom how he got into the spy biz. They put in most of his classic lines without making them feel shoe horned in. I'm not sure how I like Terence Stamp as Siegfried, he did okay, but I didn't feel him or the person playing Shtarker as being really true to the characters for some reason. Also while Anne Hathaway did a good job as 99 and made her come off as the competent member of the pair quite well, Karon and I were both rather disappointed with the decision to go with a hollywood hottie rather than someone more plain which was one of the neatest things about 99. She was a leading spy lady without being stuck with the bond lady trope of having to be uber hot even if you're a scientist. All in all this movie made the outing worth our $18 and I might buy it when it comes out cause I really enjoyed it.
Of course we went to see Batman, did you not see that coming? I mean how could we not go see it? It came out on our anniversary even if we didn't get to see it till Wednesday. Four years woohoo! So I don't need to review this, everyone else has, I loved it, Karon loved it, the media loves it, and why? Because it actually is that good. Go see what all the hype is about.
Movie four comes to you via netflix and on suggestion of Karon's knitting circle. Yeah this is strike three for them, they don't get to pick our movies anymore. Knocked Up was physically painful to watch, it wasn't so much the writing or the acting. Somewhere between the combination of the two they managed to channel some new level of awful that made me embarrassed for the species that something like this could actually be allowed to be released in theatres and not be some shitty direct to video release. Almost all of the characters were so poorly written that you could only feel sorry for the actors because even if they were any good there was no way they could recover from the script. Most of the characters involved layer upon layer of horrid stereotypes that resulted in the most disgusting human beings ever conceived being paraded across the screen. My TV has been tainted by this monstrosity and will never be the same. Also I just have to say, if Hollywood is listening, Jonah Hill should not be allowed to be on screen ever again. The characters he plays are sinkholes of the worst parts of humanity and I'm beginning to think that they must be written for him specifically, thus for the betterment of all entertainment, do us the favor of putting down his career like a sick animal before it fouls any other films. The movie left us with such an unpleasant taste in our mouths that we had to follow it with a chaser of Family Guy and anime.
So the movies were hit or miss with an even 50/50 evaluation. Karon and I are quite pleased with our four awesome years and the celebration of it. Dinah is still cute and fuzzy.
Later all.
