watchmen was good, not great, but good

the trailers were pretty damn badass, I didn't know there was a new terminator movie even in the works, was not a new wolverine trailer but it was the first time i saw it somewhere other than youtube, I might almost be excited about this star trek movie now...maybe

it was really amazingly nice today

I forgot to detail Dinah as GM cat in my earlier post, Karon had been sitting in her chair GMing when Dinah hopped up into her lap and proceeded to help by occasionally nuzzling the adventure to a different page. Working theory is she noticed when Karon overlooked something in the module and was trying to direct her to the parts she wasn't doing according to spec

Druids are sickly broken. I mean seriously, at level 9 I'm going to have a pretty kickass spell selection, wildshape, and a pet that does 2d6+9 damage on a bite with a 21 AC and evasion, that is really darn overpowered

Chester gas continues to kick the butt of local gas prices. Of course if I actually drove anywhere in St. Louis county I could probably get cheaper.

I've only had two responses to my email about doing stuff on my birthday, neither of which were actually positive sounding

Dinah is being super cute

and i know the weekend wont be long enough to recover

I don't really feel like going into detail on the stuff that had me frustrated, be assured though Chinese was involved.

the happy story though, we got to game last night. Karon's game was super fun, there was lots of fun had by all, lots of laughs were had by all. I suspect Matt will have difficulty with us as we've got a full party of in character players. We spent most of the night chattering in character. Great party interaction, we had two characters that are Ravenloft locals and two that are new to the realm of shadows. We has one quasi fight, with a 0 level npc, that Katie from my Chinese class dropped him with a called shot to the arm, after the hilarity of the monk and npc both botching on a grapple check, so as we put "they both fell down during their slap fight."

So far I'm the party's cajun aunt in a way. I've spouted some earthy wisdom and made gumbo laced with goodberries. I'm still enjoying the role if nothing else because of the interaction. Everyone freaking out over my "walking log," just wait till the gator gets a hold of something in a fight. We, don't have a main damage dealer/tanky character at the moment, the gator is the closest we have, and seriously, seriously, gator is mean.

Looking forward to next session in two weeks.

Chinese

blarg

ded

我觉得中文很难。我觉得复习生词容易、语法太难、也写汉字太很难。

Typing in chinese is so much easier. I just have to know the pinyin and remember what the character what I want to say looks sorta like.

the real question of course is if lj takes hanzi unicode...
I'm feeling pretty dead tired right now and I blame the schedule I made myself. I had thought to myself if I have all my crap on two days except Chinese it would be great cause then Tuesday and Thursday I do all my homework for the week or some shit. That hasn't really been working yet. By the time I get home from class and Tai Chi on Monday and Wednesday its 715ish, in the case of yesterday by the time I had showered and gotten done with the grocery run Karon and I made it was after 9. As a result I've spent today mostly feeling dead on my feet.

Of course the whole falling on some ice this morning didn't help me feel better today. Upside is that I haven't felt any residual twinges so I think i landed right to not twist or do any serious injury to myself. It hurt like hell when I hit the ground and I was a little worried my laptop might have been hurt in the fall but it booted fine. It gets jostled around in my pack and probably unslung and set down to hard way too often but keeps on running like a trooper so far.

Of course now that I mentioned it the next time I look at it the damn thing will probably explode.

Tai Chi yesterday was pretty hard, arguably I haven't done it in two years now but it felt good to get back into it even if I was cranky and sugar crashy by the time I got home.

I also picked up the rockband ACDC thinger the other day at malwart for $20. Was 18ish songs and the ones I played are pretty fun, but I'm a little disappointed. As far as I can tell it does not actually install the songs to your hard drive so you can only play them from the expansion disc and thus not use your characters from rockband itself, this seems weird as I'm pretty sure the whole concept of downloadable content and installing expansions is sorta second nature to rockband in general and not unheard of on the 360 what with games like Oblivion and FF11. This lack of functionality is a little confusing to say the least.

First Chinese test of the semester is tomorrow and I'm thoroughly convinced I am going to bomb it. I seriously am no where close to being back up to speed yet, I'm pretty sure none of us are, and have barely started to process the new characters for the unit.

Other annoyances of late are limited to my earmuffs breaking the other day. I went to put them on and they just snapped clean in half, I have no idea why, but now my ears are cold on the metrolink platforms which really sucks. I also have no idea where mom bought them for me. During the malwart run that got me my lil rockband expansion thing I failed to find any replacement earmuffs and stocking caps just doesn't work with my hair so if anyone knows where I can find replacement ear coverings let me know.

Okay I'm mostly ranted out so I'm gonna try doing some studying or something for a bit.
So over the weekend Karon and I decided to retile the kitchen, Karon had been looking at color schemes for a while and had narrowed things down to a few tile styles so when we were killing time in Carbondale Friday we decided to hit Lowes and found some pretty and cheap ones we liked for the kitchen so we bought a fuckton of them and brought them home with us.

Speaking of coming home that night, despite what Karon says about it being because it is so hard to prove I rolled through a stop sign without video I think I disarmed the police officer when I corrected him on my gender at the start of the exchange. Suffice to say warning acquired. Don't be distracted by watching drunks on the side of the road rather than making sure there are no cops about when you come to a stop in Chester or else you might get pulled over for wanting to be past the drunken yahoos.

So most of yesterday and a chunk of today has been spent in moving furniture and applying our new tiles, I'm currently down to the hard part, being the parts I have to cut and the parts I have to move a fridge for. Was gonna take a nap in an attempt to recharge before hammering out the last of the floor but the kitties have been conspiring against me again, they woke me up at quarter to 8 and now they won't let me nap. Naughty adorable fuzzies.

So far the only major annoyance is that my knees are kinda bugging me from sitting on the floor working so much. Oh well almost done and then I get to start moving the furniture back to where it should be. And doing my homework that I have been ignoring all weekend. It's only reading assignments so I don't feel too bad about blowing it off. I mean I have 45 minutes on the train in the morning and then 40 minutes before chinese class and 40 minutes before my St.Louis and the West class. Plenty of time to at least skim my readings. Yeah ok this might all not get done tonight...

So weird thing in my mail the other day. I mean there was a lot of normal stuff, my birthday present for myself, my birthday/christmas present for Spivey, my book for my chinese history class, My Chinese Coach for DS, but then there was a letter from Philmont. Someone at OVC(Okaw Valley Council for the non scouters in my viewing audience) apparently tossed my name into a hat for people to send to some conference out at Philmont this summer. Philmont is one of the super awesome national camps that you get to go to if you're lucky, and by the read of the pamphlet(which is a little detail sparse in some regards) it sounds like while you do the conference thing you do get to do a lot of the stuff that you would have done if you came as a troop as well. It isn't even like a you've been selected as a candidate thing either by the read of it as their is an included approval code from OVC that is required for processing my application. It's just weird, this is the sorta thing I would have expected say 6 years ago when I was still working for OVC as camp staff, or even a few years later when people who knew me would have still been active, not a half decade later. Not to say I'm not interested either, it sounds kinda interesting, even though it is some kind of conference where I get trained and then am supposed to go back and share my experience with the council. The main thing is that I keep thinking lately about how I have no money really, and then here is this awesome thing that I could go do...but costs 500 for me to go on, and while I could apparently bring Karon I think if I'm reading it right it is another 350 then and to top it off I think this is just my fees for once I get there not travel expenses. There isn't like a bus from OVC, I have to drive my happy ass out to New Mexico to do this...frustration, I has it.
So I have some extra free time thanks to the snowday I declared yesterday and the legitimate one today, as a result you kids get an update.

Not that there is a lot to say yet. Back in class as of last Tuesday, such an odd thing starting the semester a day late because of a federal holiday, but since we don't get another posted holiday until spring break I'm not complaining.

Spring semester 2009 includes St. Louis and the West(the name pretty much says what it is about), Modern Chinese history (focusing on the period from 1800 till 2000), Intro to Government (cringe), and Chinese 2(double cringe).

My professors generally seem nice this semester albeit a few are a bit bland so far. The poli sci instructor was a real surprise actually as I wasn't expecting anything from him, but much like my geography course of old, this is a really excited and energetic instructor at a godawful early hour of the morning. Fushun is herself as she cam be no one else, as a result I have ordered myself a copy of My Chinese Coach for the DS to see if I actually learn from that as I don't pick up much of what she says in class. My history professors are a couple of great guys this semester and I'm really looking forward to the classes. Modern Chinese history is actually being taught by an old chinese guy who came to the country as a kid. He has a great accent that seems so bad movie that you don't want to believe it is real. The way he drags out the a's in Harvard when he was talking to us about himself was rather hilarious. History of St. Louis and the West has to be my low ball at the moment, the guy teaching it while he seems kind of interesting really wasn't holding my attention Monday. Sure he was just doing the start of the class spiel about himself and the scope of the class, but if you can't make working for National Geographic and flying off for random weeks to go scuba diving with seals or charting glaciers in Alaska interesting I think you're doing something horribly wrong.

Nothing else to really talk about yet aside from that I hope you all stay warm.

Raised on a steady diet of comic books, you grew up to be an unstable lunatic, whose wacky ambitions are only matched by your delusions of grandeur. You're too crafty to get caught, otherwise you'd certainly be locked away in the loony bin!

Take the quiz!

I got to say that was some criminally high levels of cute, possibly even weaponized cute. In point of fact we may very well be dead from cute and our bodies just haven't stopped working yet. Days from now the medical examiner will say, "Yep, seen this before. They died from too much cute."

zomg those robots were so fucking adorable.
please note that the gifts presented in this song are in no way indicative of what I or my household(Karon and me combined) received, they just were geeky or amusingly appropriate to real life. Number one is actually resultant from Dinah snuggling down under the tree on the blanket sparking a comment about how she was the best present of all.

Also if I wasn't lazy I would only post this one day at a time until Epiphany, but I am so you get the whole song at once.

On the first day of Christmas,
my true love gave to me
A Dinah under the tree.

On the second day of Christmas,

it is a word cause I just used it. Don't make me get one of my English major friends to make it super legit.

So Karon has been here with me now for a few days and we started in on some much needed home improvements. I really wish I had involved Matt in the start, middle or end of this project but I muscled through and have been doing it all myself. Go me. We decided to get rid of the skanky half-assed not so installed roll linoleum dad had put into my bathroom and replaced it with these nifty vinyl tiles they sell at hardware stores that are self adhesive and pretty kick ass. the trick of this of course is that really you have to let the adhesive cure for at least a good day...probably two in order to make sure it stays put rather than coming loose. So I started work last night after we'd both taken showers and am almost done now. The main thing that has been slowing me down of course is measuring and cutting the tiles to tetris together into a neat and finished looking floor. Things to know for the future, I need a metal straight edge for cutting along, some kind of jig that would let me anchor it in place with c-clamps would also rock cause I've managed to mess up a couple of simple cuts cause I couldn't hold the straight edge I was using and the tile under it completely still while cutting. Also I need to go find some grout or caulk to seal the edges along the tub and toilet. I also need to find out if theres some kind of sealant I need to apply to this afterwards to make it completely waterproof or if I'm supposed to cross my fingers and home that the seams are flush enough to hold out water(I know they aren't).

Ash and Dinah are fighting a bit. They seem to be calming down after a few days, but Dinah apparently had gotten used to being an only child again and now that Ash is back she is a bit miffed that we brought the stinky boy cat to her home. Ash isn't doing anything in response to Dinah hissing and growling which is good seeing as he still has her claws. He has even been so good as to try and offer big sis toys on a few occasions as peace offerings. So far this has only gotten him hissed at for getting too close, but we have hopes.

Oh well back to the tile pits. I have a floor to finish.
I'm smelling 2 A's and 2 B's. Got back my history term paper which was a full 50% of the semester grade and I got an A on it, also had an A on the midterm so chances are I got an A for the class. Chinese is confirmed as an A. My writing class I don't know about as Dr. Troy was really vague about her grading which we never got to see any of. No returned papers or assignments had a grade so we're left with a void of subjectivity that is hard to read. My ed psy class I did ok on but I think I flubbed the final largely from burnout after my history term paper. Good thing it was a smallish(a bit under 10%) part of the grade so I'm not worried about it killing my score too much.

Time for some much deserved WoW. I mean I'm still not 80 a month after the expansion came out, what the hell is up with that?
I just checked on a lark, I wasn't expecting anything to be up yet.

the numbers are in though...I somehow got a 93% in Chinese...

I have no fucking clue how. I mean I felt stupid on a number of sections on that test, I just blanked on dozens of characters and here I stand with an A.

Context clues for the win I guess.

I should go work on my ed psy take home...I just need to bask for a few more minutes.

I'm at just under 4 pages at 1300 words. I have a strange question though crossing my mind. So the prompt for the paper says 3000 words or 12 pages in a standard double spaced format. I've checked some of my other shit and I'm usually running about 350-400 words a page that means even going down to say 300 words a page thats only 10 pages. I'm not sure where this 12 pages is coming from he wants. Maybe my margins are too narrow. If at 3000 words I'm at 8-9pages as I project I might try going to a 1.25 margin to see if that pushes me to 12 cause otherwise I think he doesn't know how long papers are in actuality.

With that in mind I'm gonna take a stretch and walk around for a few minutes to get the blood flowing and wake up some then settle back down to work in 20 or so. I was really kicking myself at first that I hadn't broke 5 pages at midnight until I did that wordcount.

i swear this is the most I've updated in months

anyway I finished reading the last of my sources at a little after 6, grabbed a 40 minute nap, a shower, and am now puttering for a little bit before I knuckle down to work. Gonna start slow, do my source citations and settle in for the long haul probably at 9. Wish me luck folks.

I thought last night suuuure, I got through 400 pages I can sleep from 1-5 and then have plenty of time in the morning to read before school at my journal sources I hadn't gotten to. I got up at 8. Twitch twitch.

At school got my pdfs ready to be read, just needed to update people about my how I am made of self sabotaging Epic FAIL.

I should not start with the smaller pdfs and work my way up, mix them together so that I don;t have only big files later.
I've accumulated 6 pages of notes so far as ive been reading today in the 2 and a half hours I have spent so far. I think I have a method, 2.5-3 hours on, the first span was short cause Dinah, our cat, demanded attention before she'd let me out of bed after my nap, then an hour break. The break that is currently coming to a close was brought to you by Hardees and my dinner, the parents went out while I was asleep, after dad had eaten the last of the leftovers...bastitch. Anywho, I'm almost sorta feeling accomplished now that I'm fed and thinking about it, I also need to take some aspirin for the headache I got going on. I didn't sleep well last night, thus the nap, I tossed and turned a lot. In a bizarre twitch I just checked my grade for Chinese and after my oral interview today and the final skit yesterday I am somehow back up to a 90%...I have no fucking clue how that happened. That means that if I do moderately well on the final exam next week I might be able to pull an A in the class despite that shitty week I was sick and got nothing done and a 70 on the test over that unit. I really have no words there and must get back to reading about one of the sneakiest bastards the French royal line ever bred. I've heard a lot of shit about Charlemagne but this dude he's got some serious James K. Polk style machinations playing both sides against each other. He fucking not only turned all of Henry II's sons against him, but then he played John against Richard and Geoffrey's son Arthur against John all to weaken the English hold on Normandy and Aquitane so that he could swoop in and claim them again for the French crown. This is some serious scheming here.

So I'm done with my ed psy bullshit for the week, I think. Finished the group paper a little bit ago and then retouched my morality development paper some. Managed to tack an extra half page on without either A repeating myself or B sounding too much like an asshat. Even though the topic is moral development. Uhm, go me?

So that leaves first and foremost my final interview in Chinese tomorrow. Oh I want to kill myself already just thinking about it so to be quick and to the point, I seriously think I remember less right now than I did at the interview in October, not only that we only get 4 minutes, 4 to cover everything from the entire fucking semester. Ya know, we have days where we have an hour and a half for class. Why don't we use those instead of the ones where we only have 50 minutes to do shit like this? Fucking hell.

So after that I have 48 hours to finish my history paper. All ten pages. I really don't know how I will do that. I might actually have to be awake that entire span to do so. If that is the case I will enjoy my sleep tonight and remember it longingly over the next two days as I pile drive through a stack of articles on the government of Philip Augustus and craft a paper detailing how he reformed the French monarchy to actually be a working whole instead of the bit of claptrap it was previously. Reminds me I should get more articles tomorrow.

Twitch twitch twitch. Need more time need more time zomg how the fucking hell am I gonna get that done, stupid procrastinating fucking dipshit sunnuvabitch. rant, splode, die.

Ok, I think I got that out of my system now. Gonna grab a shower then go to sleep the sleep of the just and righteous who don't get to sleep till after the work is done.

I got two of the four papers done over the weekend. The one that is a group piece I will get to tomorrow when I have a chance after school. I really haven't had time to care yet about it yet. As it is I need to be up by 6 and probably at school by 9 which gives me two hours before i leave to do my chinese homework I havent gotten to, the train ride to finish reading for my fiction writing class and then two hours before chinese to finish up the aforementioned homework and prepare for the presentation my group is doing that tomorrow.

I fucking hate my educational life at this moment. This is the most shit hitting the fan I have ever had over a Thanksgiving break and I really don't like it.

I really haven't even started on my paper for history that is due Thursday and is like 60% of my class grede.

cut, cut, wrip

gonna fail, gonna fail, gonna faaaaaaaail!

one step at a time

first fail chinese then fail history

kaflargle
avoidance-drrr it's the week of thanksgiving of course I have way too much to be doing and not enough give a shit to go around

progress-got all my sources read and organized in my head for my ed psy papers

video games-first of all I dinged 74 in WoW earlier during my avoidance, this shows the end of my rest xp and as I refuse to deal with the 1.5 million xp for a level wrath has brought sans rest xp I have lost my main source of avoidance.

in a random ad I saw earlier though I spotted somethinng weird

http://www.gotgameentertainment.com/rhiannon/

a game, named rhiannon with probably welsh/celtic ghost story plots

I has a friend named Rhiannon

I have no idea if Rhiannon actually likes the point and clicky horror adventure games, but if she does she almost has to play her own game doesn't she? Otherwise Rich should play it and tell us about it.

in other news:

Dinah seems to be settling back in well to my place. Karon and I moved her prior to the end of the semester so that A: we both had kitties to maintain our sanity, B: we wouldn't have to move both kitties when we move her, C: Ash would have a few weeks without Dinah to torment him when he is recovering from his impending surgical adventure at the vet.

Shes been a bit of a beggy whiny cat, but she always is. It's worse I think cause she has nothing to really beg for since I eat at the parent's house most days which eliminates the hope I might drop food for her to gobble up before I can get it cleaned up. On the upside she is eating and drinking on her own which means I don't have to worry about a poor starving kitty. She isn't eating as much as I'd like, but she is still just getting settled in.

Tomorrow's agenda: write a paper, draft a second paper, read for a third paper, and possibly due some more article hunting for a fourth paper. And at somepoint in all of that I need to study my Chinese too.

yeah it's time I went to bed.
